Family Camp Outs

Family Camp Outs

Build Your Family Adventure

Pack 279 takes pride in being a very active Pack with regular monthly offerings for every child associated with our Pack. We also take special care to ensure families are equally involved and excited by our scouting activities.

Perhaps that is why our Family Camp Outs are so popular. For as long as anyone can remember, Pack 279 has planned two annual camp outs: The Fall Family Camp Out and the Spring Family Camp Out.  Creative names, no, but fun? Absolutely!

Our camp outs bring the best that Cub Scouting has to offer in a fun, compact, safe, and educational weekend outing.

Below are some more details about our Spring and Fall Family Camp Outs.

FALL FAMILY CAMP

Fall Family Camp

While the activities we conduct at fall family camp may change year to year, the philosophy we have planning it remains the same:

Make it fun. Keep it simple. Be true to Scouting.

If you come to a Fall Family Campout with Pack 279, here is what you are likely to experience. We will have 60-70 scouts and parents bunking on cots overnight in a lodge at Hidden Vaelly, Bashore, or Tuckahoe. There will be a hike, a small lesson geared at helping your scout complete a requirement for a loop or badge, and some free time for kids to play together while parents chat and relax.

There is always a campfire and plenty of well-prepared food. S’mores are common. So is Crackerbarrel – a late night sweet treat before camp fire ends. We tend to host flag retirement ceremonies at the Fall Camp Out every few years to properly retire damaged US flags.

There will be songs, skits, storytelling, and if we’re lucky, clear skies to see the stars.

We welcome families who want to pitch a tent and sleep outside overnight. We also encourage dens to take leadership roles in planning and hosting the camp out. Usually the entire event is 24 hours – from the afternoon on a Saturday to lunch time on a Sunday.

SPRING FAMILY CAMP

Spring Family Camp tends to cap off the Scouting year. With major events like Pinewood Derby, Blue & Bold, and Bridging behind us, most scouts are winding up final requirements to advance to their next rank.

Often held in April, we will have 30-40 scouts and parents bunking on cots overnight in a lodge at Hidden Valley, Bashore, or Tuckahoe. There will be a hike, usually some fishing, and some free time for kids to play together while parents chat and relax.
